Earlier that day.
Katya. Dear, dear little Katya. She thought she could evade him forever. Well, that little girl had another thing coming. Adrian had eternity to waste, and all the resources to help him do it. He had to hand it to her though, she had managed to escape his side for many years. Through decades he’d searched for her, and perhaps she’d grown careless. Did she really think that he’d forget her scent, after thirty years of living in the same house? Hardly. But just in case his sense of her had become a little… dull, Adrian was at the humane society in Silverthorn Crossing. What a quaint little town, full of supernaturals- which was insanity. If ever there was to be an exposure of their kind, Silverthorn would almost certainly be obliterated. At least, that’s what Adrian would make sure of as a human leader.
Back to the task at hand.
Adrian needed a companion, a dog with power and a good nose. He didn’t want it ruined by pampering, so a humane society seemed the place to go. Just something that he could later pass off without wasting too much money. He passed through the dog section, a human woman chattering incessantly about each and every dog they passed, assuring him that anyone would be a good pick. The Yorkshire Terrier was too small and frail, and far too yappy. The mastiff too old and heavy. The pit bull was too young and innocent.
And then there was one.
Hanna the Rottweiler mix was the only choice left. With enough power and charm on her side, it was a good pick. She wasn’t too young or old, bulky or frail. So Hanna it was. Though that name wouldn’t do.
“I’ll take her.”
Adrian interrupted the over-zealous woman mid-sentence.
“Are you sure sir? She’s very high energy-”
Mentally sighing, Adrian looked the woman in the face with a slight polite smile.
“I said that she’ll do.”
The woman clearly didn’t like that but sensed danger and quickly changed course of plan. Good. After filling out meaningless papers, listening to how to take care of a dog and purchasing dog products. Hanna was handed over to Adrian. The poor little dog seemed very wary of him, but refused to back down. Despite himself, Adrian smiled. This was a tough one.
They walked out into the fresh spring air of a sunny day. A man passed on a Harley Davidson, creating a racket from the muffler that Adrian could barely handle. Hanna strained against her leash, barking and snarling at the flashy motorcycle. And that’s when it came to him.
“Harley.”
The dog looked up, tilting her head. Maybe it was just the strange sound of his voice, the predatory purr in it, or maybe the dog actually recognized the word. It didn’t matter, it was her name now.
xXx
The sun was slipping over the horizon. Many people hadn’t even bothered braving the beach yet this year, it was still too cold for most humans. Adrian sat on the beach, Harley sitting next to him. The fierce brute had quickly become loyal, probably sensing that Adrian wouldn’t hesitate to get rid of her if she proved herself unready for this life. This was true. For some reason, Adrian held off on hunting Katya down. One sunset couldn’t matter, could it? Anyway, he needed to train Harley to hunt, also. That could take some time. Oh, Katya was somewhere in Canada. This much Adrian knew. He couldn’t look into her future, she had never learned to look beyond her past and present. Katya never made decisions and it blinded him. He’d seen Canada, and that’s where it ended. Every time. A location and then… nothing. She thought she could outsmart him, her creator.
Oh, Katya. Dear, dear little Katya. She thought she could evade him forever. Well, that little girl had another thing coming.

The sound of the waves cashing against white sand. The smell of salt in the wind. Everything about this place was both comforting and unsettling to the mermaid. Comforting because she had grown up to these surroundings. Unsettling because she hadn't been here in a while. But slowly she had been getting paler from the lack of salt water, so she had no choice but to come to the beach to hydrate her body. It could only last so long without being in the ocean, so she was forced to come back periodically for a little swim.
Lucky for her, it was cold. Not many people would be on the beach, if anyone even was, so she would have the water all to herself. Unless another mermaid came along, of course. The chilly water didn't effect her, so she knew she wouldn't have a problem with the fact that it was cold.
But it seemed as though her calculations were wrong. There was someone else on the beach. And... a dog? Her pet ferret, Miki, who had been sitting on her shoulder(and hanging on for dear life when she had ran to the beach,) twitched her nose as she picked up the scent of the other animal. Melody's eyes flashed with interest as she walked up to the other person. As she got closer, she could see him better. A boy...no, man. And appeared tall, much taller than the petite teenager she was, but she couldn't quite tell, since he was sitting.
"Err, 'scuse me. But who are you? And why are you out here when it's so cold?" Ah. That was a stupid question, the same could be asked of her. Oh well, too late to take it back, "You do know that you can't bring dogs out here, right?" Not that she disliked dogs. She just didn't want this one to ruin the beach. If the beach gets dirty, ocean gets dirty. Ugh, how annoying that would be. Melody didn't want to have to swim in filth.
She crossed her arms as she inspected the dog and it's owner, her eyes growing larger as they swept over the pair curiously. The dog was a big one, a rottweel, or whatever they were called. She didn't research dogs, she didn't know. In her opinion, they were too slobbery. Cute, and playful, but slobbery. And common. You don't see many people with pet ferrets, having a unique companion was definitely preferred.
She re-inspected the man. He wasn't exactly old, probably late teens or early twenties. The man was quite handsome, not that she cared. There was something...odd about him. Like her, he probably wasn't a human. So what was he?
So why was he sitting on a beach, with a dog, just staring at the sun? Kind of random thing to do. Although the sun was quite pretty, she admitted, why did he have to do it tonight? It would be weird to swim around if she knew someone was watching her. She didn't like being in her normal form around people she didn't even know. ACtually, no. She didn't like swimming in general in front o someone she didn't know, especially if it was just the two of them. Well, the two of them, one hissing ferret, and a scary-looking dog.
Melody placed a hand over Miki soothingly, trying her stop her from hissing at the person and dog. Miki fell silent, but her eyes still stared daggers at them. She clambered off Melody's shoulder and stepped onto the sand, sitting next to Melody. It was obvious that she was trying to look superior. What an odd ferret she was. Fufufu Melly laughed quietly in amusement before turning back to the others. Her gaze changed from amusement to questioning as she awaited the man to answer her questions.

Salt virtually masked any scent Adrian had hoped to catch. He doubted anyone would venture down here on a cold spring day like this, albeit the fact that he, himself, was here. Perhaps a supernatural or two. Despite this, the vampire still managed to catch the scent of something humanoid- not quite human. He glanced toward the young, petite girl with her ferret out the corner of his eye. She was no threat, that much was apparent. The girl merely strode into his presence, without the reservations of fear. It was no matter. The girl probably wasn’t looking for trouble anyway. Or so Adrian thought, until she demanded who he was and why he was there. What was this? Her beach? Hardly. Closer as she was, Adrian could detect the scent of almost human blood in her, tinged by the smell of… the surroundings- or rather, the ocean. Well, well, a mermaid. An unexpected development.
“Who am I, my dear? I’m the man sitting on the beach with his dog, even before you arrived, might I add.” He answered coolly, rising to his feet with Harley copying his movement. A slight smile twitched at the corner of his mouth for the fact. Good dog. He thought at Harley. Her ears switched toward him, thinking he had spoken out loud, though confused at the lack of sound. Adrian realigned his attention toward the supposed mermaid. Satisfaction grew in his mind as her eyes widened, looking at Harley and then at him. Adrian let her inspect him, for what it was worth.
“It’s not all that cold, I’m from England you know. What are you doing here out in the cold, all by yourself, miss?”
His eyes sparkled with the menace of slight insanity and a desire to make her squirm. Before he took offense of her telling him that dogs weren’t allowed, he remembered that she most likely lived in the sea and wouldn’t want dogs near it. However, he wasn’t going to let go of it that easily.
“Says who? Don’t worry, she’s perfectly trained.”
Not quite yet, but Harley still wouldn’t dare disgrace Adrian even so. The predator in him warned against that. Adrian’s eyebrow rose at the spitting scrap of fur on her shoulder. What did that thing hope to do? Pathetic. The girl chuckled at the over-sized rodent’s antics as she set it on the sand.
“My name’s Adrian,”
The implication rose in his voice as he offered her hand, a polite smile plastered onto his face. He expected her name back, but it was no huge thing if he didn’t receive it. Perhaps she might recognize the cold, unforgiving skin of a vampire. All the better.

Was he trying to be funny? His words were...funny...but his voice didn't sound humorous.
As the man stood up, Melody found herself, to her irritation, having to look up at him to see his face. That was one of the down-sides to being short: she always had to look up to talk to someone. His dog, oddly enough, also stood. And then she had a look of confusion about her. How curious, why was she so confused?
Deciding not to ponder on the oddness of the situation, she listened to his next words, “It’s not all that cold, I’m from England you know. What are you doing here out in the cold, all by yourself, miss?” England, huh? Well, that place was pretty cold..or so she'd heard, "It's not like I want to be out here. I need the salt water." She didn't explain why; he'd find out soon enough, if he stayed here.
The gleam in his eyes made Melody shudder slightly. But only slightly;it was doubtful that he would even notice. She didn't like that look. There was something off about this guy, definitely strange. "Well, if she's trained, I guess it's okay." Mel pet the dog's head, "She's really cute."
As she straightened up, Melly noticed the man extend an arm, holding out his hand, obviously implying that he wanted her to shake it. "Adrian, huh? Cool name. I'm Melody, but you can call me Mel, I guess." she shook his hand, immediately feeling the cold. Her skin crawled uncomfortably as she realized what he must've been. Vampire. Not that she had any problem with vampires. But they made her uneasy.
If he was a vampire, he must've already guessed she was a mermaid. Perhaps that was for the best; then he wouldn't be surprised about why she was swimming and why she would have a tail. Mel was well aware that there weren't a large amount of mermaids in the area, and she'd rather have him know now then know later.

Adrian rested a hand on Harley’s head, finding slight comfort in the warmth and life in her. For reasons unknown to him, he didn’t feel the need to feed- even as he felt the blood pumping through her veins. He detected a small amount of irritation in the girl’s gaze as she tilted her head up at him. She was exceptionally short, wasn’t she? Adrian’s earlier assumption was confirmed as the red-head explained that she needed the salt water. He’d never met a mermaid before. They were either secretive or very rare apparently. Adrian smiled slightly when the mermaid accepted Harley. Harley seemed to like that too, wagging her tail as the stranger-girl stroked her. She moved to do no more though, just as Adrian wanted it.
“Nice to meet you Melody,”
He replied and then let go of her hand, assuming that Melody had gotten the message. Vampire. What a comforting thing to know, huh?
“Have you lived here long?"

Sure, she wasn't a big fan for dogs, especially slobbery ones, but she did like animals and Harley seemed pretty nice. Seemed.
As Adrian released her hand, she felt a slight feeling of relief. The cold skin made her uncomfortable, not that she showed it. "Nice to meet you Melody." he said. "Nice to meet you, too." she nodded.
His next question took her off guard. "Oh, not very long. About two months. How long have you been here? I've never seen you around." Well, that's mostly because she normally hung out in or around her apartment, or at school. She doubted this guy went to school, or lived near her home.
The longing to be in the salt water was steadily increasing. Melody was itching to gt int that water. The only problem was, she didn't want to be rude and hop into the water for a swim. She shifted her weight to her other foot as she stared longingly at the waves.
Miki squeaked, scurrying over to Harley and sniffing her with interest. The little ferret had never seen a dog before, and was slightly intimidated by it's size. The dog towered over her, but instead of fearing the dog her interest grew.

Harley was capable of winning over people, it was whether she could bring them down that Adrian needed to know now. He wouldn’t try it on the mermaid, she had nothing to do with this, and while Adrian was unstable among other things, he wouldn’t hurt the innocent without reason. That was where he drew the line. It was good to see that young people still had manners these days, as shown by the girl named Melody.
“I arrived here this morning.”
He answered simply, throwing another white smile her way. That would be why she hadn’t seen him, no one had- besides that idiot of a woman at the pound. Adrian’s eyebrow rose at the little ferret’s interest in Harley. Harley, of course, didn’t attack or show much interest herself. Smug satisfaction crept into Adrian’s smirk, it seemed like the Rottweiler could actually sense what she should and shouldn’t do.
“You should probably go swim or something,”
He told Melody, removing his approving gaze from Harley and leveling it back at the mermaid. It was probably what she had come here to do in the first place. Soon he’d have to start training Harley and get back to his search. It wouldn’t do to have all these years of work to be wasted.
